A tumbling tumbleweed.jpg

Abandoned by my mother when I was two months old, I lived with foster parents and was adopted when I was eight. Sixty years later I am very content with my life. The results came back from the Ancestry DNA kit. I was hoping to learn about my ethnicity, not having any knowledge or memory of any biological siblings.

How do you react when you answer a phone call and are told, "We have been looking for a set of twins for twenty years, I think you are my brother." Little did I know how the unknown would bring emotions, fears, and tears.

It started with one, three, six, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen. Over the years my path crossed with my family I had never met.  The journey has led me to learn about an attempt to drown a baby in the Columbia River, a false birth certificate, and sealed documents requiring judges’ signatures.

Skeletons in the closet, one-night stands, webs of unknown affairs.

Jennifer Self.png

Jennifer Self - Author

Jennifer has been a Christian for nearly 30 years. God blessed her with a wonderful husband, and she homeschools their four children. Their oldest graduated in 2020, and their second in 2023.

She also taught private piano lessons for 22 years. She has written songs, articles, poems, and blog posts.

When her husband lost his job in 2016, their family built an e-commerce business together. She wrote her first book about that journey. She is also working on a Bachelor's degree in Church and Family Ministry while traveling several weeks a year in music ministry with her family.

Her Books

Venture.jpg

Venture is the story of a father who went from losing his job to creating jobs in seven years, the family he chose as his team, and the God who led them faithfully through it all.

At 5:30 on that March morning, Jennifer wrote, “When we look back over our life, we see only the peaks of the mountains. The valleys, then out of sight, were the pathways to the mountaintops.” Five hours later, all she and her family could see was the valley. Determined to reach the mountaintop again, they created an unlikely team and began the climb.

Their story gives a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to build a business while also building relationships. It shares how working together as a family has highs and lows and how they often occur in the space of 24 hours. Most of all, it shows the power of family teamwork and an abundantly good God.

The Self family is living proof that nothing is certain except God’s faithfulness and the hope He gives. Loss taught them to hold on to hope when circumstances threatened to shake it from their grip.

Whatever personal venture readers may undertake, this story offers hope. The mountain top is just ahead.
